What is a semiconductor fab?

A plain-language map of the factory, process-control system, and surrounding infrastructure that turn a design into repeatable silicon.

A fab is more than a building

A semiconductor fab is a tightly controlled production system: process tools, clean environments, metrology, material handling, recipes, maintenance, and yield learning work together. The useful asset is not bare floor space. It is a qualified manufacturing system that can repeatedly produce a specific process.

The surrounding stack matters

Wafers leave the front end only to encounter packaging, memory, substrates, test, optics, power, and cooling. A capacity map that stops at wafer starts can miss the layer that actually limits complete systems.

The preserved Fab Machine guide explains the operating loop in detail, while Physical Address maps the infrastructure around it.

Use the map

When a company announces a new fab, ask what process it will run, who will operate it, which products are qualified there, and which downstream layers must be ready before the output becomes a deployable system. That turns an impressive building into an understandable capability.
