What this layer does
Substrates and companion materials are often invisible in a product launch, yet they carry electrical, thermal, mechanical, and reliability requirements that cannot be swapped casually. The relevant capacity is qualified capacity for the specific product, not simply a global materials total.
How control is built
Designers and manufacturers create resilience by qualifying suppliers early, building a second source where it is realistic, and aligning long-term demand with the investment needed for new material capacity. A supplier relationship becomes strategic when a replacement cannot be qualified in time.
What to watch
Track lead times, qualification status, geographic concentration, and the ability of a product to use alternate materials or formats. The smallest component can set the shipment rate for a much larger system.
